Oklahoma’s “Punxsutawney Phil”
Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning, meaning 6 more weeks of winter! Or so the groundhog decreed, as he does almost every year. 🙂
Most of the U.S. has experienced quite a winter already, so I don’t think this could come as much of a surprise, even if we all believed the world’s greatest forecaster.
Here in Oklahoma, however, there is another tradition on this day. Every year, for I’m not sure how long (I’m guessing not long), zookeepers at the Oklahoma City Zoo choose an animal to give the Oklahoma winter forecast. In the past, they have used a prairie dog, bison, or pot-bellied pigs! This year a pair of grizzly bears stepped up to the plate.
Will and Wiley stepped out of their den this morning and did not see their shadows, so the Oklahoma City area is supposed to have an early spring! I certainly wouldn’t complain…although February looks like it may be another cool month, I can always hope the bears are right! Storm season is just around the corner…
Happy Groundhog Day!
